ESTONIAN FOLK SONG SUITE

Wind Orchestra

2014

20’

Published by Bert Langolier, Estonia

PROGRAM NOTE

This suite in 3 movements is written for and dedicated to the students at the Music School in Viljandii, Estonian and their fine conductor Bert Langolier.  They are modern band arrangements for intermediate level group of age old Estonian tunes.

I.  Kahaanuska-Karoobuska

This uses the A section of Kahaanuska and the B section from Karoobuska

II.  Subota

This is a slowed down version of it's usual folk group tempo and turns it into a beautiful ballad featuring the oboe.

However, the score indicates that the melody could (hopefully will) be played on a Kannel!, an Estonian plucked zither.

III.  Kikapuu.

I think it's very catchy catchy tune.

I reordered some of the sections of this tune to accommodate my sense of form.
